Tupelo T-Rex

Tupelo T-Rex debuted in the WPHL in 1998 at Tupelo Coliseum. On the ice, the team was quite successful, making the playoffs in two of their three seasons in the WPHL and going 46-20 in their third season, 2000-01.

Off the ice, though, the squad was on shaky ground. They established themselves in the seventh largest city in Mississippi, having a population of around 34,000 people at the time. The T-Rex nearly went bankrupt during their inaugural season, but new ownership saved the team. The WPHL combined with the CHL after three seasons, but the T-Rex refused to join, preferring to try their luck in another pro league. Unfortunately for them, the CHL imposed a non-compete agreement, and the T-Rex were barred from playing professional hockey.

For the 2001-03 season, they would play in the America West Hockey League (AWHL), a low-level junior league. But it wasn't much of a home. They were the only club east of the Mississippi River in the league's existence, with the majority of the league's franchises based in Texas, Montana, and Canada. They struggled as well, winning only 4 of 112 games in two seasons. No really, they won only four games and were outscored  850-178. The T-Rex dissolved after two AWHL seasons in 2003.
