Toledo Mercurys
The Mercurys were the first pro club in a long series of Toledo hockey clubs. They were founded in 1947 and got their name from a sponsorship with a local automobile dealer who sold Mercurys. They played in the Toledo Sports Arena, which doubled as a logo of the Greek god of the same name. The Mercurys were big box office and ice success story. They won their first IHL championship in 1947, defeating Detroit Bright's Goodyears. The team's sponsorship changed in 1949-50, and they became the Toledo Buckeyes, relocating to the EHL and sporting one of the most unique hockey logos you'll ever see. They returned to the IHL after a year and won the title again in 1951 and 1952. The team folded in 1962, although it was immediately replaced by the Toledo Blades.
