Birmingham South Stars
The Birmingham South Stars were one of several South Stars teams who competed in the defunct CHL. This was a one-year wonder that played at Birmingham's Civic Center Arena during the 1982-83 season. The CHL desired a franchise after the WHA's Birmingham Bulls demonstrated that hockey was feasible in Alabama. In their debut season, the South Stars won 41 games and advanced to the CHL championship, where they were defeated by the Indianapolis Checkers. Despite the success of the Birmingham Bulls, the South Stars did not do well in attendance and allegedly upset the CHL by drawing terribly in the finals versus the Checkers. The CHL was struggling financially at the time and would only endure one more season before dissolving. With the South Stars' relationship with the CHL deteriorating, the team relocated to the ACHL and rebranded as the Bulls.
