Hampton Gulls

In the second season of the SHL, the Hampton Gulls were an expansion team. They took the ice at Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. The Gulls were instantly successful under coach John Brophy (future Maple Leafs coach and EHL icon), losing the playoff finals to the Charlotte Checkers in each of their first two seasons. The SHL folded in January 1977, leaving the Gulls in first place with no league to participate in during their third season, 1976-77. The Gulls moved to the AHL for the 1977-78 season, but folded due to financial troubles the following year.

Rod Langway, a member of the NHL Hall of Fame, is a former Gull.
