Toledo Hornets
For the 1970-71 IHL season, the Toledo Blades were renamed the Toledo Hornets. While the Blades won two championships, the Hornets struggled after changing their name. They won only 43 of 144 games in their first two seasons. After signing coach Fred "Skippy" Burchell, the club won 36 games and entered the playoffs for the first time since the rebranding. After a disappointing 1973-74 season, owner Paul Bright put the team up for sale. He was unable to find a buyer and opted to relocate the team to Lansing, Michigan, where they became the Lansing Lancers. The Lancers failed miserably and did not even finish their first season in Michigan. Meanwhile, Toledo received an expansion franchise, which became the Goaldiggers, who won the IHL in their inaugural season.
