Halifax Citadels
The Halifax Citadels started play in the AHL following their 1988 relocation to Halifax. Originally, they were known as the Fredricton Express and were associated with the NHL's Quebec Nordiques. They maintained their NHL connection with the Nordiques as they made the move to Halifax.
The team took over the Halifax market from the Nova Scotia Oilers, who had moved to Cape Breton, and played out of the Halifax Metro Centre, which is located at the base of Citadel Hill. The team, of course, was named for Citadel Hill and the Halifax Citadel military National Historic Site.
The Citadels played in the AHL from 1988 until 1993. Their run on the ice was somewhat successful, making the playoffs in During their first two seasons in Halifax. However, they did not make it past the first round. Following their departure in 1993, the Citadels were as of now, the last pro level club to play in Nova Scotia's capital. However, the Halifax Mooseheads have been a long-standing QMJHL franchise in the city since 1994.
