Washington Eagles
The Washington Eagles were the city's first professional club, entering the EHL for the 1939-40 season. The Eagles and the Ice Follies became a new attraction in the city with the building of Riverside Stadium, an open air arena. The Eagles would play three seasons in the EHL, winning the championship in 1940-41 before dissolving in 1942. Redvers MacKenzie was their coach, which is about as wonderful an old-school hockey name as you'll find. Following the departure of the Eagles, Riverside Stadium was turned into an indoor arena that housed Georgetown basketball, high school football, and became a prominent roller skating rink. In the 1960s, it was destroyed to make way for the JFK Performing Arts Center.
