Grand Falls Andcos
The Grand Falls Andcos - also known as the Grand Falls All-Stars until 1956 - were a senior A level team in the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League. The squad was founded in 1945, and it continued in some form until 1962. The Andcos name comes from the support the team received from the town's paper mill, owned by Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company (ANDCo).
The team wanted to assemble a roster strong enough to take on teams from Corner Brook and St. John's. In 1948, the team's owners constructed a brand-new arena that could accommodate thousands of spectators, and they appointed former NHL standout Gordie Drillon as head coach for that campaign. The squad, which had previously won the title in 1953, went on to win five successive championships from 1955 to 1959 before dissolving in 1965.
It wouldn't be long before there was hockey in Grand Falls, though as the Cataracts would be created to fill the void of the dissolved Andcos.
