Baltimore Skipjacks

The Baltimore Skipjacks were originally a reborn version of the Baltimore Clippers that played in the reincarnated version of the EHL in 1979. However, the Skipjacks used a green color scheme instead of the clippers orange and black. After two years, the EHL ceased operations, which led to the formation of the ACHL by a similar collection of clubs. This new league featured the Clippers, who changed their name to reflect their new status as the Skipjacks. After playing in the ACHL for just one season, the Skipjacks decided it was time to move up to the big leagues and merged with the Erie Blades to become a member of the AHL.

The Skipjacks enjoyed nearly instant success, compiling victory totals of 35, 46, and 45 in their first three seasons, the culmination of which was a defeat in the Finals at the hands of the Sherbrooke Canadiens in 1984-1985. On the squad were future NHL players such as Marty McSorley and Bob Errey, while future NHL coach Bruce Boudreau played center for the club. The Skipjacks would enjoy a successful run in the AHL for a total of 11 seasons, qualifying for the postseason five times. However, following the 1992–1993 season the club announced that it would move to Portland, Maine, claiming monetary losses in the millions of dollars.
