Huntington Blizzard™
The Huntington Blizzard™ debuted in 1993-94 at the Huntington Civic Center in Huntington, West Virginia (now Mountain Health Arena). The squad, which had a distinctive purple and blue color scheme, was Huntington's first pro hockey team since the IHL's Huntington Hornets departed town in 1957.
The Blizzard struggled in their inaugural season, winning only 14 of 68 games. Year Two saw considerable improvement, with a 28-37 record that earned them a playoff spot. Attendance was also good, with the squad averaging over 4,000 supporters each game in each of the first two seasons. It would take them until their sixth season to finish with a winning record, 34-29, and earn their second playoff berth. Unfortunately, both of their postseason runs were cut short in the first round.
The Blizzard's greatest season was also their final in West Virginia, as attendance gradually declined during their stay in Huntington. The squad went 35-25 in their seventh season, 1999-00, and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. After that, the Blizzard would take a pause and eventually relocate to Texas.
