Cincinnati Mohawks

The Cincinnati Mohawks, the city's first hockey club, began play in the AHL in 1949-50 and played their games in the historic Cincinnati Gardens on the city's north side — the first year the Gardens was open. The Mohawks struggled to compete in the AHL, placing last in their division for the first two years and performing below .500 in each of their first three seasons. Following that, they transferred to the IHL for the 1952-53 season, and everything went swimmingly. They won five straight IHL championships from 1953 to 1957, winning at least forty games each year (the league played either 60 or 64 game seasons). They folded after the 1957-58 season, the first in a long series of Queen City hockey clubs.

Fred Shero and Harry Howell are two well-known Mohawks. Shero led the Broad Street Bullies to the Stanley Cup and Harry Howell's number is retired at Madison Square Garden.
