B.C. Icemen
The BC Icemen boast one of the most distinctive logos in the history of hockey, and their name carries a unique dual significance. "BC" initially represents Broome County, the location in New York where the team was based. However, it also pays homage to the nationally syndicated comic strip "BC," created by John Hart. Interestingly, Hart was the creative force behind the logo for the Broome County Dusters, a team that competed in the NAHL at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY, during the 1970s. Several decades later, Hart once again lent his artistic talents to design the logo for the BC Icemen.
The BC Icemen competed in the United Hockey League (UHL) from 1997 to 2002, encompassing a span of five seasons. Their performance on the ice was commendable, with playoff qualifications in four of those seasons and a consistent average attendance of around 3,000 fans per game during their tenure. Their most notable season was in 1999-00, when they achieved a remarkable record of 47 wins, 20 losses, and 7 ties. This successful team was led by Dieter Kochan, who later played several games for the Tampa Bay Lightning in the following season. Although UHL players typically didn't make it to the NHL, the BC Icemen had a few exceptions, including Keith Aucoin and Brad Jones.
Despite lasting five seasons in Binghamton, the BC Icemen faced challenges with changing ownership groups, with the final group declaring bankruptcy, ultimately leading to the team's closure.
