Giant Mine Grizzlies
The Giant Mine Grizzlies were a part of the the Yellowknife District Hockey Association that was established in 1937 by the various gold mining companies in Yellowknife. Yellowknife experienced a gold rush during the 1930s. The other teams that were assosciated with the mines were the Con Cougars, and Negus Hogans. The city also had a team known as the Molson Indians. The league existed until its dissolution in 1975.
Records of league are hard to come by and pretty much non-existent on the internet. The teams seem to be made up of mine workers, who were frequently hired expressly for their ability to play hockey and work in the mines. The games were held in the Gerry Murphy Arena, and the Walter Howe Cup was the championship trophy. Frank Horvat, who played for the Grizzlies from 1952 until 1967, was one such recruit. He appears to have been a hardy and accomplished player who recorded 76 goals and 32 assists in 26 games throughout one season.
We've created a logo that is similar to the one the Grizzlies wore, but isn't exact as there are few records from that time. We think it's a great tribute to a blue collar class of hockey player from way up north.
