Macon Whoopees
This might be the only hockey team that is also a sexual pun. The Macon Whoopees played in the Southern Hockey League (SHL) briefly in the 1970s and had a very 1970s name. The Whoopees, based in Macon, GA, only lasted one season but left us with a memorable franchise name. The franchise was founded by the SHL to create a sixth team for the 1973-74 season and capitalize on the potential of hockey in Georgia, since the NHL had entered Atlanta the previous year. Unfortunately, neither the NHL nor the SHL had success in Georgia during the 1970s. The Whoopees would go out of business in the middle of their inaugural season.
