New Haven Nutmegs
For the 1952-53 season, the New Haven Nutmegs were a one-year wonder in the EHL. The New Haven Tomahawks, who joined the EHL in 1951-52, rebranded as the Nutmegs for their second season. In their lone season in the league, the Tomahawks won 37 of 66 games and advanced to the EHL Finals, where they were defeated in five games by the Johnstown Jets. The Nutmegs performed less successfully, winning only 28 games and exiting the playoffs in the first round.
The Nutmegs did have one prominent name on the roster: Ehrhardt "Ott" Heller, a former Ranger and eventual Hall of Famer, who skated in 21 games for the squad. Heller was a defender on Broadway for 15 seasons in the 1930s and 1940s, scoring 231 points in 647 games. After leaving the Rangers at the age of 36, he spent another ten years as a player-coach in several minor leagues, notably with the New Haven Ramblers, Indianapolis Capitals, Cleveland Barons, and, of course, the Nutmegs.
