Portland Penguins
The Portland Penguins played one season in the WHL (known back then as the PCHL) in 1949-50. They began play as the Portland Eagles at Portland Arena in 1944, but opted to change their name for the 1949 season. They were successful as the Eagles, making the playoffs in most seasons, including a trip to the Finals in 1947, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Monarchs. In 1949, the team opted to change their name to the Penguins and finished 32-30-9, missing the playoffs. In 1950, they reverted to the Eagles moniker and had another .500 season before falling in the first round of the playoffs. Following the 1950-51 season, the club folded due to financial issues and a deteriorating environment at Portland Ice Arena. The arena, located at Northwest 21st and Marshall streets, closed in 1953 when the fire marshal demanded $80,000 in electrical renovations.
