Accessibility Policy

Vintage Ice Hockey wants everyone to be able to browse our teams, read our stories, and buy our gear — whether you use a mouse, a keyboard, a screen reader, or a phone held sideways. This page explains what we've done, what we're still working on, and how to reach us if something isn't working for you.

Our standard

We are working toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, across vintageicehockey.com and vintageicehockey.ca. WCAG is the standard referenced by the Americans with Disabilities Act, Ontario's Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and most other accessibility laws.

We don't use an accessibility overlay or widget. Those tools sit on top of a site without fixing it, and we'd rather do the work in the site itself so it works with the tools you already use — your browser's zoom, your operating system's contrast settings, and your screen reader.

What we've done

  • Alt text on every image. Every product image on both stores describes the item, colour, view, and design. Every blog image describes what is in the photo. Our process for adding new teams includes alt text as a required step so new products don't ship without it.
  • Keyboard navigation. A "Skip to content" link is the first thing you reach when you press Tab, so you can bypass the header and menus. We've removed a third-party widget that couldn't be reached by keyboard.
  • Product forms. Size, colour and quantity controls are labelled, sold-out options are announced, and errors are read aloud, so you can choose and add to cart with a screen reader.
  • Site structure. Pages use one main heading and a logical heading order; collection listings use one named link per collection so screen reader users aren't read the same link twice.
  • Ongoing monitoring. We run automated accessibility scans on the site and keep a dated log of what we test, what we find, and what we fix.

What we're still working on

We're honest about this because it's more useful than a compliance badge.

  • Currency selector. The currency menu in the header doesn't yet have a proper label. It's next on our list.
  • Older page templates. Some of our "Shop by State" and league landing pages were built with a third-party page builder and are being rebuilt by hand. Until a page is rebuilt, its images may be missing alt text and the skip link may be absent.
  • Size charts. Some product pages show sizing as an image. We are converting these to text tables, and in the meantime sizing is listed in the product description.
  • Third-party components. Parts of the site are provided by other companies and we have limited control over their accessibility: Shopify's checkout, our rewards and wishlist tools, the email sign-up popup, product mockup images generated by our print partners, and embedded YouTube videos (which rely on YouTube's captions). Where we can configure these, we do; where we can't, we've told the vendor.

Tell us if something isn't working

If you hit a page, product, or feature you can't use, we want to know. Email canada@vintageicehockey.com with the page address and what happened, and we'll reply within two business days. If we can't fix the problem quickly, we'll help you complete your purchase or find the information another way.

We review this page at least once a year and whenever we make a significant change to the site.
