Barrie Flyers

In the 1950s, the Barrie Flyers were originally a junior A team playing in the OHA. From 1945-1960 the team played at Barrie Arena and were successful on the ice. Coached and owned by Leighton "Hap" Emms, the team won the Memorial Cup in 1953 and 1955. Emms played in the NHL during the 1920 and 30s for the Montreal Maroons, Detroit Red Wings and New York Americans. A number of big leaguers came through their ranks including Ed Westfall, Jerry Topazzini, and Don Cherry. The team would relocate and become the Niagara Falls Flyers in 1960. 

An OHA senior team picked up the Barrie Flyers moniker in 1966 and became a dominant team in senior hockey. During the 1970s, these Flyers won the OHA Senior A league four times, and made the Allan Cup finals four teams, winning once in 1974.
